| Smart, Inc. is a service-oriented
company that was started in 1978 to fill the void that existed at
the time between new equipment and used equipment. We are a full
service dealer that specializes in saddle binding equipment only.
Parts, service, moving, installations, operator training, and technical
support are all a part of our business. The idea came to me when
I was working as a service technician for McCain manufacturing.
I had spent over 10 years before that working around the country
as a stitcher operator and had moonlighted a few times doing repairs
and installations. Between working, moonlighting, and my undying
love for restoring cars, I had little time for anything else.
McCain Manufacturing in the 1970\'s was arguably the leader
in saddle binder sales and technology. Their plant was working
to capacity and a new machine could take as long as a year to
receive. It was much the same throughout the industry. So if you
could not wait for a new machine or afford one, your only alternative
was to take your chances on the used market.
Being an automotive enthusiast, I thought that rebuilding these
machines would open up an entirely new market. So, why not? After
all, it seemed I was born with a 1/2\" wrench in my hand and I
could operate the machines as well as anyone. So I took my knowledge
of automobile restoration, my knowledge of saddle binding, a few
borrowed dollars, combined them all together and bit the bullet
to start the company. That was 24 years ago. Now it seems as though
everyone is a rebuilding expert.
So, what makes us different from the rest? We usually own what
we sell. No middleman or broker\'s fees. We also have the ability
to operate these machines, not just set them up and make adjustments.
Our years of production experience have taught us the little tweaks
and tricks that it takes to run a difficult job. Anyone can run
the gravy. And help is only a call or click away. Our machine
shop is available for emergency repair parts or custom modifications.
All of our rebuilt and reconditioned binding lines are fully
assembled on our floor with all guards in place, just as though
it were being installed on your floor. We then operate the machine
at full speed for 100,000 cycles. Next we run paper and make books.
By doing this we can deliver a trouble free machine ready to produce
quality work. Our installations average less than two days from
start to running machine. So with our combination of rebuilding,
production operation knowledge, vast parts inventory, installations,
service, and machine shop we feel that we are still the best alternative
to a new machine. We have never failed to honor our guarantees.
We only rebuild a few select machines each year, so that\'s
why you may have never heard of us. This is not just a job, but
something I truly enjoy doing and getting paid to do it. When
our machines are completed they are cosmetically and mechanically
excellent. If they were restored cars, they could easily win a
trophy.
